Syncope: Challenges, diagnosis and treatment options in 2020, presented by Dr Vince Deen

Learning Objectives:

1. How to manage patients with syncope
2. To identify the “red flags” for patients with syncope who require specialist referral to a Cardiologist with expertise in Arrhythmia management
3. To understand the role of the implantable loop recorder for aiding in diagnosis particularly for patients with unexplained syncope

Abstract:

Syncope is a common problem accounting for 1% of emergency department presentations, 50% will require hospital admission and 30% leave without a diagnosis. There is a significant cost to the healthcare system and associated morbidity. Targeted history taking and examination with appropriate non-invasive tests are important for diagnosis and management. Additionally, the implantable loop recorder is an important tool for the diagnosis of unexplained syncope.
