Detection and Management of Atrial Fibrillation in the Stroke Patient

Abstract:
Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) is a well-recognised cause of the most disabling acute ischaemic strokes. It is clear that initiating anticoagulation reduces the risk of cardioembolic stroke. Evidence and technology have evolved in recent years to greatly improve our ability to detect PAF. In this presentation, we will explore modern methods of PAF detection and their potential benefit in the reduction of stroke.

Learning Outcomes:
Atrial fibrillation is a significant cause of severe disabling strokes – once found, anticoagulation makes a difference.
Guidelines have changed and prolonged cardiac monitoring to try and detect paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in the stroke patient, is now a standard of care.
