TAVI in 2020: Not Just for High-Risk Patients

Abstract:
Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has generated a worldwide paradigm shift in the treatment of severe symptomatic aortic stenosis (AS) over the past decade, particularly for high and intermediate-risk patients. Earlier in 2019, the first two randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the outcomes of surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) or TAVI in low surgical risk cohorts were published. Their findings and implications create future challenges for Heart teams in Australia and New Zealand. A collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to patient selection and management is required involving primary care to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
